Function keys not working on E15 Gen 2 & linux

I keep on trying different distributions on my E15 Gen 2 laptop.

Fedora, KDE Neon, now Kubuntu 20.04 (want to upgrade to 20.10) when it will be ready.

First thing is always to install a recent kernel that will not prevent the system coming back from sleep mode. It can be done by following instructions for Ubuntu wiki or using the mainline application (continuation of the free version of ukuu).

The Function keys are working after computer wnet to sleep mode. Here is a way to get the computer to go in sleep mode and wake up automatically at boot.

The rtcwake command enters a system sleep state until specified wakeup time. it is part of util-linux package on ubuntu based distributions, so install it if it is not done already:

sudo apt install util-linux

Then modify the root crontab:

sudo crontab -e

Add this line to the file:

@reboot sudo rtcwake -m mem -s 2

Save the file.

This will put the computer in sleep mode for 2 seconds after boot.

Reboot your computer and login into your user session the Function keys should be working.

Thanks to ONDRA5 who pointed me to the right direction

KDE Neon 20.04 on Thinkpad E15 Gen 2

KDE Neon is my prefered KDE based distro.

For the installation on my Thinkpad E15 Gen 2, I used the latest image (neon-user-20200910-0945 at that time).

The image is running a 5.4 kernel and the amdgpu is not correctly managed, so I needed to boot in safe graphics mode.

After installation I downloaded the latest stable kernel (5.8.8-050808-generic) from here with the following files

and installed the packages:

cd Downloads/
sudo dpkg -i *.deb

My laptop has a bug related to Fn keys not working without go to sleep mode (related to a BIOS problem see here

But current setup prevent my laptop to come out from sleep mode.

I needed to remove the nomodeset from the kernel options. This is not part of the default grub file in KDE Neon.

The nomodeset is added via the file /etc/default/grub.d/neon-installation-nomodeset.cfg

whether I remove the file or remove the nomodeset options.

I just simply renamed the file:

sudo mv /etc/default/grub.d/neon-installation-nomodeset.cfg /etc/default/grub.d/neon-installation-nomodeset.cfg.old

Then update the grub configuration:

sudo update-grub

After reboot I am able to put my computer in sleep mode and get out of it and the Fn keys are working

Thinkpad E15 G2 and linux

I recently bought a thinkpad E15 G2, with AMD Ryzen 7 4700U processor, 16GB RAM and 512 SSD.

I use it as my main computer and installed Fedora 32 on it right after unboxing (windows only booted once on this machine)

The system is running fine, all my applications are working well:

  • Docker installation:
  • Nextcloud client synchronized with my nextcloud docker container
  • Boinc manager to check the progress of my boinc docker containers
  • watching my jellyfin or plex videos in firefox (for those having a s4032 error, look at /plex-error-s4032/

I have a problem like all other E15 G2 owners running linux: the function keys are working only after suspending the computer. See this discussion on Lenovo forum. It looks like a BIOS problem but  upgrading the computer BIOS to the latest version (1.08) does not solve the issue. It is a minor issue to me.

As the E15 G2 has an IR camera, I am trying to have Howdy working to experiment facial recognition on Linux, but not successful until now.
